1) Better wages and conditions for migrant farm worker (Move place to place to find work)
2) Child of 6, parents owned ranch and grocery store in Arizona, lost everything in depression and became migrant workers.
Didnt have clean water or toilets, harsh and unsafe conditions, low wages, left school to support family.
Married another migrant worker, little education and training forced return to farm work, formed labor union for better conditions and higher wages.
3) Leader of National Farm Workers Association formed 1962, Joined with Agricultural Workers Organizing Committee in its first strike against grape growers in California in 1965, two unions merged forming United Farmer Workers in 1972.
4) Sen. Robert Kennedy friend, Jesse Jackson friend (civils rights and black rights), unsanitary conditions, little pay, forced to take children out of school to support family, never ending cycle
Fought California grape growers with non-violent protests, boycotts, marches and hunger strikes, inspired by Gandhi and Martin Luther King, successfully negotiated for higher wages and better treatment of agricultural workers
